What I Protect In A Rough Week
We are 37 (I think) days out from the Secret City Half Marathon, and man, these runs get harder to fit in the closer we get! I want to chat a little about how to fit your workouts into your life.
At the beginning of the week, you can usually get a fairly good view of what days will be crazy, and what days where you might have some time. So you pick your hardest workouts, the ones you cannot miss (I’m looking at that long run), and you schedule it like a meeting. I’m talking in your google or apple calendar, on your fridge, everything. That is non-negotiable. My long run happens Saturday or Sunday morning, whichever has better weather predicted.
Now, if I’m programming for you, you probably have 2-3 other runs and some strength work in there, too. This is all very important. But you know what’s not as important? When you get them done. My easy runs happen in the mornings, on my lunch breaks, and after work. I toss those things around on my schedule wherever they’ll fit. Same thing with my strength workouts. Whatever days they fit best, that’s where they go.
The point here is that I look ahead to the week and plan. I think intentionally about what’s coming, and I plan accordingly. Now, there will be weeks where everything goes to sh*t, and you miss a workout or two, but that’s okay. That’s just one week. Don’t make it two, cuz you’ll be missing key parts of your training.
If you're trying to figure out which sessions to protect in your own week, I'm always up for talking it through. Send me a message on Instagram and tell me what your week looks like.
